P3 - Task 1  

Pen Portrait

Pen portraits are a marketing technique for defining an audience. Pen portraits are one way to get a handle on your target audience by creating a fictitious character to enable you to speak directly to them. The more fleshed out and based on reality the more effective the tactic will be.

Find an example photo of your archetypal target audience for The Last of Us and put it into a Photoshop document,A4 portrait ratio
Detail their: 


  • Age
  • Gender
  • Lifestyle
  • Favourite book/film/game
  • Something they like to do at the weekend
  • Where they go on holiday/who with
  • Three things in their pocket or bag
  • Worries
  • Job
  • Best friend
  • Favourite item of clothing
  • Most loved/hated thing
  • Spending power - how much money they are likely to have left in their pocket to spend every week on fun things like cinema, games, going out (GIVE AN ACTUAL FIGURE IN £)

Start to play through The Last of Us as a class

You then need to think about what influences and appeals to the target audience. Remember these are different aspects.

Appeals- Think about what is in the game, the narrative, graphics, combat system, HUD, Style, Genre etc.







Influences - Think about everything outside of the game, Reviews, Awards, Company Status, Previous games, Social media influence etc.
